What Is A Google Local Guide?
You are probably wondering what being a Google Local Guide is all about. Have you ever used Google Maps to look up a restaurant or hotel? Well, how do you think all that information got there? It was by people like you and me.
Google Local Guides is a program developed by Google to create a community of people that will be in charge of verifying the information offered by Google Maps is correct and also, contributing more valuable information.
It also helped Google to discover new interesting places for the public even if they weren’t a local themselves, such as, special settings or places of interests in cities, etc.
All this information offered by users for free makes it possible that Google can with almost complete certainty show the best places to eat in a city, the best monuments to visit in any specific place or the hidden jewels to avoid massive tourism, etc.
Local Guides is a service from Google Maps that lets anyone contribute photos, reviews, and more. Google wants to hear about your personal experiences to help improve Google Maps.
Google launched the Local Guide program to enrich the quality of information available on Google Maps so people looking up places on Maps could get more key information about places. So, if you think you want to contribute to Maps and get some perks along the way, being a Google Local Guide could be for you.

Why Should You Become a Google Local Guide?
There are many reasons to become a Google Local Guide. For instance, one main reason is that you love sharing information about places you’ve been to. Have you always thought about being a tour guide? Now is your chance!
Love a favorite restaurant and can’t tell enough people about it? This is for you. Got a secret spot that has the best view in your hometown or someplace you’ve been recently? Share it on Google! Or you want to make sure that people are having the best experience they can while avoiding the not-so-good ones then the life of a Google Local Guide is for you.
You can unlock incentives, levels, and badges and get a status from Google with the title of Local Guide through the reviews that you will leave. For every rating, written review and photo you contribute, you earn points that carry you through the different levels of the Local Guide program.
The more active of a guide you are, the more points you’re given. And, points let you level up from level 1 through to level 10.
Did you know that 46% of all Google searches are made with the intent of finding local information? As time goes on, more and more brands are empowering their customers to advocate and sell on their behalf.
It’s also important to remember that people trust people. Share all your local knowledge with others.
The entire Google Maps is powered by these local guides when they work in their towns and cities located throughout the world.

It’s pretty easy to join the Google Local Guides program. So easy in fact, you can simply do it in a matter of minutes. All you need to sign up as a Local Guide is a free Google account.
Step 1
Create your Google account if you don’t already have one. Then, visit https://www.google.com/local/guides/signup on your device.

If you have location enabled on your device, you’ll see that your town will be pre-populated for you. If not, just add your location, confirm you’re over the age of 18, and agree to receive emails.
Easy peasy, right?
Step 2
Congratulations! You’re now signed up and can begin to make contributions to Google Maps. You’ll find a welcome video on your dashboard and an option to leave your first review.
Just search for the place you wish to review and then click the ‘Contribute’ button to start earing points, badges, and rewards.
Adding Reviews Via Desktop
Once you’ve added the name of the local business you wish to review, you’ll be asked a series of questions by Google, based on the type of business you are reviewing.

For example, If you’re reviewing a hotel you’ll be asked for an overall star rating and then information about the type of trip you took. You’ll also be able to assign individual star ratings to rooms, location, and service, and upload images.
And, you can also now begin to make contributions directly to Google Maps. Just go to Maps and you’ll be able to fact check and verify information that other Guides have submitted nearby to your location and make edits to incorrect information.

If you turn on location history, Google will also give you suggestions for places to review and verify based on where you’ve been.
Adding Reviews Via Smartphone
If using your Android or IOS smartphone or mobile device, the sign-up process is even easier.
If you don’t have the Google Maps installed go to your app store and search for and install Google Maps.

But, Google does have many offers as you reach higher levels. Within a year, I got to level 6 which has unlocked a few very cool features.
A few of things I’ve received have been Local Guide socks, Google Play Music subscription, and 75% off digital rentals in the Play Movie store.
